About the Viking Name Generator

The Viking Name Generator is a free tool that produces full Viking warrior names with earned-sounding epithets, shieldmaiden names, clan and war-band names, longship names, and berserker names. Pick a name type, choose how many results you want, and generate as many batches as you like. There is no account, no daily limit, and no premium tier, and everything the tool produces is yours to use in tabletop campaigns, video game characters, historical fiction, fantasy novels, and worldbuilding projects, personal or commercial.

Flavor first, on purpose

This site takes a deliberately flavor-first approach. The given-name roots it draws on are real Viking-age Scandinavian names in commonly anglicized forms, but most of the epithets, clan names, and ship names are invented in the authentic style rather than copied from any single saga. The goal is a name that sounds like a reputation: something a skald could plausibly have attached to a fighter, a crew, or a hull, even if no medieval scribe ever wrote that exact combination down.

Our sibling site, the Norse Name Generator, takes the opposite approach. It focuses on attestation: authentic Old Norse given names with their documented meanings and proper patronymics, the -son and -dottir forms built the way the period actually built them. The two tools split the territory cleanly. When you need a historically grounded personal name, use Norse. When you need a battle name, a war-band, or a ship with a story behind it, use this one. If you want the history underneath the flavor, our guide to how Viking bynames really worked separates the attested record from the legends.
